Motor Oil Recycling

There are still a lot of people in Elk County who change their own vehicle oil. The recycling office has partnered with municipalities and businesses for many years to offer do-it-yourselfers a place to recycle used oil.

Oil doesn’t wear out; it just gets dirty. Used oil can be re-refined into lubricating oil that is equal in quality to lubricating oil made from crude. Conversely, motor oil, if not managed properly, poses an environmental concern. A quart of oil can create a two-acre sized oil slick on surface water. And a gallon of used oil can ruin a million gallons of fresh water.

Fortunately there are a number of places to either recycle your used oil or burn it in a used oil burner. With the prices of heating oil reaching record prices, many shops have installed these types of heaters. And most are always looking for used oil to fuel them.

If anyone would like to be added to this list, please contact the recycling office. Contact these businesses directly for information on when they accept used oil.
